Hacking Knave's Social Check for Recruiting
Knave doesn't currently have much to say about recruiting procedures, other
than the wages they'll expect and the number of recruits available. Knave does
have a social check, though, which would seem to fit the bill. Hiring recruits,
then, will require a social check: D20+CHA+MODS >= 11+(RCHA|RWIS)
. Here, CHA
is the player's stat, and RCHA and RWIS are the recruit's (use whichever makes
the most sense given the situation).
But pass/fail is no fun, especially if you are familiar with other systems' hiring procedures, like OSE, which use reaction rolls with degrees of success and failure:
Result | Reaction |
---|---|
Refuse and slander | 2 or less |
Refuse | 3-5 |
Make another offer | 6-8 |
Accept | 9-11 |
Accept with elan | 12 or more |
What we would like to do, then, is translate the probabilities of the reaction roll onto a Knave social check:
Result | Reaction% | Check% | Check |
---|---|---|---|
Refuse and slander | 2.78% | 5% | 1 or less |
Refuse | 25.00% | 20% | 2-5 |
Make another offer | 44.45% | 50% | 6-15 |
Accept | 25.00% | 20% | 16-19 |
Accept with elan | 2.78% | 5% | 20 or more |
The overall chances of failing are a bit lower, but the chance for being slandered is just a bit higher, too, as well as the chance that they're interested, but need a bit more convincing.
The check can be reformulated for easier table lookup as:
D20+CHA-(RCHA|RWIS)+MODS
.
